There was an article published in The Scientific Approach to Slip Resistance recently by Walkway Management Group that contains quite a few statements about the ASM tribometers that are not true.

The first paragraph states that the ASM 825A or 925 devices no longer have ANSI or ASTM standards behind them. The first thing is that there are not any portable devices that have ASTM standards behind them, the BOT-3000e included. There is an ANSI standard, ANSI/NFSI B101.1-2009 that is still sold that the ASM 825A conforms to and has since 2009. The ASM 925 does meet the ANSI A326.3 standard as an equivalent device.

The ASTM C1028 standard that is referred to was never a standard that the ASM SCOF devices were. We referenced the standard and calibrated the devices to the ASTM C1028 test tile. The original SCOF designs were developed to make a portable device, not the 50 pound device called out in C1028, which tested equivalent to the C1028 50 pound device both wet and dry.

The author also writes about the TCNA transitioning from the C1028 (American Slip Meter) to the test protocol described in A326.3 which measures DCOF as the ASM 925 tests to. Again, the C1028 was never an ASTM tester and the TCNA did not use the ASM 825 models in place of the ASTM prescribed C1028 tester.

The BOT-3000E has one standard listed on the device and that is the ANSI A326.3, a DCOF standard. The device does have the function of SCOF but no standard listed to perform the test to.

The ASM 925 performs to the ANSI A326.3 standard as well as the NFSI B101.3-2022. The ASM 825A performs to the ANSI/NFSI B101.1-2009 standard. The ASM 825B performs to the NFSI B101.1-2022 standard. American Slip Meter offers both SCOF and DCOF devices that perform to national consensus standards with more available standards utilized than the BOT-3000E. The 825A has always been a recognized device as required by the ANSI/NFSI B101.1-2009 and the 825B as well as the 925 have been approved by the National Floor Safety Institute through the required ILS.

We do hope that this information of comparing the versatility of the devices, both for operation in the field as well as the multiple standards that the ASM devices conform to, that this will be helpful when you are deciding which tribometer fits your needs.
